Tuberculosis and HIV Co-infection

Voir ceci en français

Tuberculosis, more commonly known as TB, is a bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs but can affect any part of the body except hair, teeth and nails. Much like HIV, there is no 100% effective vaccine to protect against TB. TB is completely curable and treatment is a fraction of the cost of medications used to treat HIV.

It is estimated that in 2014 at least one third of all people living with HIV are co-infected with both TB and HIV (over 11 million people). Around 79% of all co-infected patients live in sub-Saharan Africa. TB is the leading cause of death of people living with HIV, and is responsible for one quarter of all HIV-related deaths.
